A major fuel project on a constrained site
What began as a small AdBlue installation to support new low-emission DM locomotives evolved into a fuel facility upgrade at Middleton Fuel Depot in Christchurch, a critical refuelling hub for KiwiRail servicing the South Island.
David Green, Project Manager at KiwiRail, was tasked with delivering a major infrastructure project on a constrained site, while minimising disruptions to 24/7 rail operations.
Diesel and AdBlue tanks added
KiwiRail engaged Mansfield Group for their technical know-how, deep site knowledge, and strong working relationship with the depot team. They managed all aspects of the build: coordinating subcontractors, installing diesel and AdBlue tanks, laying new stainless-steel pipework, and helping the team to obtain full compliance. As project manager, David didn’t feel the need to micromanage the project. The Mansfield team had the experience to get the job done properly across everyone involved.
Delivered on time and on budget
Even when a tank required remedial work from a manufacturing fault that required the diesel tanks to be removed and reinstalled, Mansfield managed the process without delays. Pricing remained transparent throughout, and changes were agreed collaboratively, phase by phase.
The outcome: a fully certified, high-quality fuel facility that performs now, and for years to come. KiwiRail’s project was delivered under budget and to the high standard expected of a national transport company.
